THE HISTORY OF THE CHESTERFIELD
There's no doubt the wellknown leather furniture pieces with buttons are regarded as timeless classics, but the history as to why Chesterfield came to be the name for these elegant furniture pieces remains a mystery to this day. It's been said that Lord Phillip Stanhope (1694 – 1773), the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, was the first to order a "Chesterfield" sofa which may hold the explanation.
Stanhope was a highly appreciated politician and writer who was also regarded as somewhat of a trendsetter at the time. The story began with Stanhope visiting a local craftsman, where he ordered a furniture piece that would allow him to sit straight, in utter comfort, while at the same time preventing his clothing from wrinkling. His wish resulted in what we today associate with the classic Chesterfield model: complete with buttoned details; curved arms filled with horse hair; nails running along the elegant edges and the even height on the back and arms.
Rumour has it that Stanhope, while lying on his death bed in 1773, was paid a visit from an old friend. With both his friend and the butler within earshot, he whispered his last words: "Give Mr. Dayrolles a chair". Both interpreted this as literally giving Solomon Dayrolles, Stanhope´s godson, one of his Chesterfield armchairs. After carrying the heavy armchair home, Dayrolles inspected his new furniture piece and was fascinated by it's refined appearance. The years of wear had resulted in a majestic art piece that made it even more attractive.
After this period, it is imagined that Dayrolles' acquaintances ordered similar furniture pieces as a natural reaction to the grand fascination that was created after Stanhopes death. The leather sofa gained a more prestigious status year after year until it finally secured a spot at the Gentlemen’s Club of London. For the last 200 years, all colour schemes and models designed have ultimately drawn their inspiration from Stanhope's original design.
Throughout the years, Chesterfield sofas and armchairs have gracefully decorated palaces, prominent business offices, hotels, restaurants, gentlemen clubs and luxurious private residences. Chesterfield has become synonymous with elegance and luxury within interiors around the world. Many would argue that the Chesterfield sofa embodies the perfect combination of comfort and finesse. A timeless symbol of luxury, prestige and style.
